Endometriosis, a condition in which endometrial uterine tissue exists outside the uterus, and diagnosed and treated primarily by laparoscopic surgery, may cause a variety of symptoms.  The endometriosis could be mild or severe, and the severity of symptoms may not reveal the severity of the condition.  Symptoms may include menstrual pain and/or heavy uterine bleeding, or spotting before the period starts.
